Do you think you are racist? Interesting article...

Okay, this is a fascinating article you must read. I like to think that those near and dear to my heart would say they're not racist. But we also all know there are times when even our most basic assumptions get challenged by an almost unconscious reaction to something. This is one of those times when we're required to review our own biases.

I've been thinking, recently, about the scenario outlined in this article. Isn't it interesting how different the reaction would be to an African American adopting a "white" child vs the opposite scenario, the one I live in...but why should it be that way? It's a great discussion to have. Lo and behold I saw this article today. Have a read and reply, if you like. How would you react if you saw this in your neighborhood park? Would you react? Do you know why you would/wouldn't?

I think this family is amazing. Can you imagine having to deal with this type of reaction or interaction on a daily basis? Could you do it, would you? I'm always humbled by this type of integrity and perseverance, in the name of love and care.

Happy Monday!

Thanks for posting this article. I've spend the last few months thinking about exactly that... black parents adopting white children...wondering how many families like that are out there, and what type of issues they deal with. This article answered some of my questions. Thanks!

Hey! Congrats on waiting! And on the beads- would love to try it but I think Judah would just have a fit pulling them off and trying to eat them! Read this article a few weeks ago- felt gateful to go to a playground where something like this wouldn't get a second glance. But then saturday ben was with the 3 kids coming to meet me and a man rushed over to him, spit in front of the stroller yelling, f*%^ing cracker! Mixing the races! Horrifying, small minded, sad. Made us have another talk about what to say in response.

Perhaps you are biased in favoring blacks over white.
Perhaps you relish the negative attention and look forward to the opportunities you get to feel contemptuous towards fellow whites.
But we don't call that 'racist', now, do we?
